THE CRAFT HOUSE  NEW

In 1976, a small group of women established a Craft House in Gnowangerup. It started with a shared interest in spinning yarn from fleece, a pastime that was quite novel at the time.
Among the pioneers of this venture were Mrs. Barbara Garnett, Glad Garnett, Maisey Hinkley, and Joyce Hams. Their enthusiasm for crafting soon attracted others, and before long, they were joined by four more dedicated ladies: Gloria Myers, Rene White, Rita Ackermans, and Beryl Briscoe.

As their numbers increased, these women began meeting in their homes, each taking turns to host morning teas and luncheons. The camaraderie they fostered was integral to the growth of their group. Recognizing the need for a more central meeting place, the Uniting Church graciously offered the use of their hall, creating a venue for the spinners.
Fast forward to early 1987, and the group had evolved significantly. Determined to expand their activities, they wrote to the Gnowangerup Shire requesting access to an unoccupied house to serve as a dedicated crafting centre.

The Shire responded positively, assisting the group in procuring the old police station and gaol with the stipulation that they would restore and paint the buildings to prevent further deterioration.
Throughout this restoration process, many men and women devoted their time and skills. They sandblasted doors, walls, and floors, repaired locks and fences, and applied fresh paint to the buildings and fences. Mr. Garnett noted that the honorary work contributed by the community was immensely appreciated by the group.

By September 1991, the efforts of the Craft Group culminated in the official opening of the Craft House.
Mrs. Garnett, one of the founders of the thriving initiative, announced the opening day, inviting the public to experience the fruits of their labor.

On Thursday, September 26, 1991, the Craft House welcomed visitors for a day filled with displays of handmade crafts, stalls, and delicious morning and afternoon teas, along with a luncheon.

The official opening ceremony was conducted by the Shire President, Mr. Ken Pech, marking a significant milestone in the history of Gnowangerup.

With a strong membership and there was a rich variety of activities planned, including ceramics, dressmaking, china painting, patchwork, and quilting, the Craft House had proved to be a central hub for creativity and community engagement.
